PWM-Z Fans Stop Spinning at Low Duty Cycles

JMC introduces a new type of PWM fan design that completely eliminates fan noise. PWM-Z fans offer Computer OEMs and motherboard manufacturers the ability to completely shut off the fan at low duty cycles, as opposed to idling the PWM fan at low speed, thus completely eliminating fan noise and vibration, saving power, and extending the life of the fan.

The idle speed of a conventional PWM fan is very low but constant as shown in Figure 1 of the attached drawing. Figure 2 shows the new PWM-Z duty cycle curve that completely turns off the fan at low duty cycles. With the introduction of the PWM-Z, JMC is the first supplier to match 2 types of PWM designs specified in the microelectronics computer industry. Please reply to this newsletter for more information and to set up a meeting with our engineering staff.

PWM-Z fans are available from JMC in the following form factors:

New Cooling Solution for Intel® P4 Socket T™ (LGA775 pin package)

JMC is proud to introduce a copper core micro-forged cooler solution that meets the Intel® P4 Socket T™ 775 pin package thermal requirements of 0.29 C/W. This active solution contains a top mounted PWM 92x25mm fan that spins at 4000 RPM. The top mounted fan is suspended above the heat sink, and the heat of the cooler is not directly transmitted to the fan therefore increasing the life of the fan. The fan assembly mounts to the heat sink assembly using standard screws, eliminating the need for gluing or clipping the fan onto the heatsink. Engineering prototypes are available upon request.

120x38mm Fixed Vane "Digital" Micro Controller Fan

JMC launched final testing of the new 120x38mm fixed vane Micro Controller "DIGITAL" fan. Currently the 120x38mm fixed vane DC fan performs at a fixed speed of 4300 RPM's producing 200 CFM at 1.0 Inch of water. The new JMC "Digital" fan is programmable within the fan by micro-code firmware and includes a soft start algorithm that prevents high start-up spike currents without any added circuits and without any added cost. The soft start feature achieves full speed in only 5 seconds and is a vital requirement for high performance air moving devices and chassis with multiple fans. Our future plan roadmap includes adding digital PWM features to this fan size family with continually improved performance.

Blade Geometry Tools
JMC's blade geometry tools enable our engineering team to simulate blade designs so that we can accurately predict fan performance. By relying on numerical simulation, our designers can predict the performance characteristics of new and existing fan designs, allowing systems to be optimized at a much lower cost than traditional design methods.

Blade geometry simulation will allow us to modify the geometry of the design, PQ curves, torque requirements, flow rate, rotational speed, and more, in order to design the most optimal air moving device and build samples that meet our customer's requirements.

4-Wire PWM for Cost Reduction
JMC offers customers a cost reduced 4-wire PWM fan that uses the PWM signal to directly drive a circuit to the motor coils. This results in 0 RPM when the duty cycle is below 5~8%, initial rotation when the duty cycle is more than 10%, and full speed when the duty cycle is at 100%. The frequency of the PWM signal needs to match the motor characteristics and is normally within the 30~80 HZ range.

  • Reduced electronics
  • Low-cost fan controller chip
  • One PWM fan model will replace many models of the same custom designed speed control fan

    Engineering Lab Tools at JMC
Read ahead to learn about a few of the lab tools we utilize that enable us to provide comprehensive thermal analyses to our customers.

    • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Software: CFD software gives our engineers the capability to analyze and optimize blade designs for fans and blowers, perform airflow and system level analysis, and evaluate heat sink designs to determine optimum fan and heat sink combinations. Higher-level analyses can also be performed for future designs involving two-phase flows and other high-end applications.

    • Infrared Camera: The IR camera allows JMC to take real-time, color thermal images that can be captured to a computer. With this image captured, JMC can locate critical hot spots that will require cooling.

Introducing the 60x25mm Panther Fan - You won't hear it coming!
JMC's new Panther fan is ready to pounce on fan noise - introducing the 60x25mm Panther fan that is so quiet, you can hardly hear it.

In traditional fans, the most dominant acoustic noise is due to the fan’s torque characteristic. The stator excitation is a square wave that is switched on and off by a specific degree value before and after the peak torque position. This excitation causes a small amount of ripple in motor torque, producing an audible vibration caused by the lower frequency commutation operation. Each small torque causes a minute flexing of the entire fan structure and results in an audible ticking noise while the fan is operating.

JMC addresses this issue with the Panther fan technology. By operating at a much higher frequency level, the 60x25mm Panther fan produces a soft commutation that results in a quiet operation that is above the audible range for human hearing. This technology can also be utilized in other JMC fan sizes.

Counter rotating fan blade design improves CFM and eliminates downtime
A counter-rotating, dual blade fan has been designed by JMC to help avoid downtime as a result of the amplified redundancy of the fan. Furthermore, the outcome is a simple fan design with increased CFM output and improved efficiency. The new design will be made available in a range of JMC DC fan sizes.

Custom blower designs greatly enhance cooling process for enclosures
JMC has developed various custom-built, high-performance blower applications to provide superior heat dissipation while overcoming system impedance. These custom blowers are especially advantageous in server applications where multiple processors can be designed in close proximity of each other in an enclosed system. Our goal is to optimize our blower design in order to achieve the customer's desired airflow, pressure and longevity requirements, while simultaneously reducing the unit footprint and power consumption.
